The Public Domain archives have been very good to me in the last few years. First with the old songs that inspired me to develop a Bluegrass/Old Tyme flavored endeavor (The Michael Elam Band) and most recently with the rediscovery of the cinematic arts.
Realistically, I am not sure where I would be musically without the pathways that have already been travelled by the Troubadours and Hobo's of America's heritage. The discovery of Old Tyme/Bluegrass music allowed for me to rediscover the migrational pathways of my family and held the door for my intrinsic curiosity as I searched for the truth of American migration through the eyes of the Europeans.
...A few months back, I contributed music to the American Library Association's Internet Archives as a means to give back to what initially inspired me to research Appalachian music. I donated an my version of an old public domain song (Tell it to Me) that I had rearranged, in hopes that others would hear it and become inspired to do the same.
Amazingly, only a few days later a man (whom I believe to be named) Brian Mota from Toronto,Canada had paired my version of this song with film footage also in the public domain. I guess being that fortunate is just dumb luck on my part! Regardless, I have been interested in this idea since and only recently found the time to pursue such a venture. Here are the results:
